SOME GOOD ADVICE TO PASS ON TO PLAYERS FROM A BRILLIANT BOOK ON BASKETBALL BY DICK DEVENZIO, STUFF - Fool Court Press, Box 25824 Charlotte, N.C. 28212
FOULING BAD SHOTS (Page 108)
"Never foul a difficult shot. Game after game players go driving into the basket and get themselves underneath or stretched out, and their only opportunity to shoot, to shoot is some off balance, whirling loop-dee-loop throw and then some eager but stupid defender swings at the ball and fouls. In a flash, a two per cent shot has become a two shot foul".
"If they want to hang themselves, give them rope! Don't try to prevent a shot that you are happy for them to take."
INSIDE DRIBBLES (Page 141)
"You should develop a sense of pride in your ability to score inside without having to put the ball on the floor at all. You should learn how to get on balance without need of a dribble, and learn how to go up strong without need of a dribble."
'It is possible to learn to fake, to score off two feet and off one foot, and to make many moves without using a dribble inside."
MOMENTUN (Page 177)
"Momentum isn't just someone's fantasy Teams do tend to score points in clusters' and it is true that a player is more likely to hit a shot after his team has hit four in a row than when they've missed four in a row."
If your team is "hot", go with it, keep the pressure on, keep shooting, and let the game flow. But don't let the game roll along when the other team is getting the best of the flow.
A good rule of thumb: when the other team scores two consecutive baskets, slow down the game, throw more passes, and keep them of defence longer until the momentum breaks.
